Foods That Lower Blood Pressure - 3 Delicious and Healthy Foods To Lower Your Blood Pressure

Hypertension, which is characterized by consistently high blood pressure level readings, is often caused by an unhealthy diet, among other factors. With that in mind, we always suggest that the first step in the treatment of hypertension is to look at your diet to determine where you may have gone wrong with it. And then, you must incorporate the following foods that lower blood pressure levels to healthy readings.

If you already love these foods, your transition from an unhealthy to a healthy diet will be easier. Just make sure that you will still practice moderation in the consumption of these foods as overeating can lead to weight loss, among other consequences. Eat only the amount of food necessary at the right time.

The first of the top three delicious foods that lower hypertension are nuts and seeds. Well, it's not a single food but let's not quibble over details. The most important thing is that nuts and seeds, maybe even add a few beans into the mix, are rich in magnesium.

If your doctor has yet to inform you, magnesium is an important mineral in the maintenance of healthy blood pressure levels. Thus, if you want to treat hypertension, magnesium is your friend. Eat unsalted flower seeds, almonds and walnuts for their high magnesium content.

Second, you must also look into bananas as one of the foods that lower blood pressure. The long, yellow and soft fruit may be humble in appearance but it packs a punch in potassium. If you can still remember your nutrition classes, the mineral potassium has close links with sodium.

Look at it this way: When your potassium levels are low, your body retains higher levels of sodium. In turn, too much sodium in the body elevates blood pressure. But when your potassium levels are high, your body is better able to eliminate sodium and your hypertension slowly returns to normal levels. Other potassium-rich foods that lower blood pressure include baked white potato and soybeans.

And if you have a sweet tooth, you will love the third food that can lower blood pressure level - dark chocolate. Just make sure of two things: one, it is pure, dark chocolate without the sugars and milk and; two, you must stick to just 30 calories a day from dark chocolate.

Why We Need Potassium To Stay Healthy

The Adequate intake for potassium is pretty high at 4,700mg per day. Many people actually don't have enough potassium in their diets which is the reason the Adequate Intake level has been set so high.

Dietary programs that are higher in potassium can lead to a decreased risk of stroke, an increase in bone density, less chance of developing kidney stones and lower blood pressure.

Potassium plays a large role in making sure our muscles function properly. The majority of the potassium ions in our bodies are found inside the muscle cells. If you encounter muscle cramps, it could be due to a potassium deficiency.

Brain functionality is yet another area that needs potassium. It is required in higher brain functions like memory and learning. It's also vital that those who suffer from anxiety or stress are consuming a sufficient amount of potassium. Potassium is actually sometimes taken as a treatment for stress or anxiety.

It also helps to decrease blood pressure. It can also effect your blood sugar levels. If you are consuming enough potassium, it could result in a drop in your blood sugar.

Kidney stones can occasionally be caused by the overuse of supplements, however in the case of potassium it is believed that it can actually stop kidney stones from developing.

Potassium is also essential for keeping your skin healthy, maintaining your body water balance and regulating your heartbeats.

I'm sure you agree that potassium is vital and we need to be sure we are consuming enough of it. There are some potential side effects that can be brought on by potassium. They are rare and they usually only occur when excessive amounts of potassium are consumed.

These include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and intestinal gas. If you're taking an excessive amount of potassium then you could experience feelings of general weakness, paralysis, burning or tingling, wooziness, general confusion, low blood pressure and even potentially death.

It really is actually quite hard to be ingesting too much potassium from your diet alone but it really is worth baring these potential side effects in mind just to be on the safe side.

Foods that are potassium rich include bananas, chicken, pork dates, figs, kiwi, orange, trout, tuna, cod, halibut, beef, chia seeds, almonds, beans and peanuts. These are just some of many good sources of potassium.

As you can see you have a decent number of options so you have no excuses.

A Potassium Supplement is Not Usually Required in a Normal Healthy Diet

Of the many minerals our bodies need to operate normally one that is often overlooked is potassium.

The mineral Potassium is critical for the proper healthy operation of all the cells and organs in the body. Another of its properties is that it is one of the four primary electrolytes in the body with the other three being sodium, calcium, and magnesium. Electrolytes are a substance that conducts electrical signals throughout the body.

Potassium is also very important to the normal operation of the heart. And, at least one study suggests a link between bone health and a diet that is rich in potassium.

There are two conditions associated with the amount of Potassium in the body:

Hyperkalemia: This is having too high a level of Potassium in the blood stream. Older individuals have a greater risk than younger because the kidneys become less efficient at eliminating excess potassium from the body as we age.
Hypokalemia: This refers to having too little Potassium in the blood stream. This condition results in weakness, muscle cramping, and a lack of energy and is most often caused by the body losing too much potassium in urine or the intestines.

Maintaining the right balance largely depends on the amounts of sodium and magnesium in the blood stream. Too high a level of sodium, which is typical of western diets high in salt, may very well increase the need for potassium.

Other causes of potassium deficiency include excessive sweating, malnutrition, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Many medications may interfere with the normal levels of potassium and testing to determine any effects should be considered. A very short list includes:

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also known as NSAIDs
ACE inhibitors; this is a class of drugs used to treat high blood pressure, heart disease, and other conditions. Frequently someone who is prescribed an ACE inhibitor is also taking a NSAID.
Thiazide diuretics
Antacids
Laxatives

Again, this is but a small part of the list of medications that may impact potassium levels. If you are taking any of these it is a very good idea to be tested for potassium levels.

Most people with a diet rich in vegetables and fruit get all the potassium they require without the need for supplements. The best natural botanical foods with potassium sources are bananas, citrus juices, avocados, cantaloupes, and tomatoes. Other foods with potassium include fish such as cod and flounder, chicken and meat.

An easy and effective way to be sure you have enough potassium in your diet is to add Mila chia seed to your daily diet. Healthy Foods To Lose Weight

Did you know that certain foods actually burn fat for you. In the next few series of articles over the next few weeks (so bookmark and keep checking back), I'm going to tell you about healthy foods to lose weight one at a time and also about foods that prevent you from burning fat. I will introduce to you the idea of putting foods together in such a mix so that you can eat what you want, eat healthy and still burn fat and lose weight. Of course I'm not going to leave you hanging, but rather I'm going to show you a Healthy Foods To Lose Weight System to implement which will help you lose 3 to 10 pounds in the first week and then continue to lose weight each week there after. Now lets begin with the first food candidate.....the egg.

But first, what about the egg?

Do you think eggs are bad because of cholesterol?

People love eggs. Why? Because they taste great. They can be a great fat burning food as well. What's that I hear you say? "But aren't eggs bad for you?" Well the research still out on that one. Look, lean protein burns fat and builds muscle and that's what we want right? "Yeah, but aren't they full of cholesterol," you say. Well let's take a look at that. The average egg has about 200mg of cholesterol and you should limit you daily cholesterol to about 300 milligrams (mg) a day. Unfortunately eating two eggs at breakfast will put you over. Now that's the bad news, but here is the "work-around" for the good news.

First of all eggs contain vitamin B12 which really helps break down fat cells. Second there is no cholesterol contained in the egg white, only in the yoke. Finally, third egg whites are one of the best sources for fat burning lean protein. So how do we gel this together and make eggs one of our healthy foods to lose weight? Well lets see what we can do. If we are normally eating about two eggs with yokes at breakfast because we just love the taste of the whole egg, and we're taking in about 400 milligrams of cholesterol at the same time, which just happens to put us about 100 milligrams of cholesterol over our daily limit, what would happen if we did the following: Supposed we still ate two eggs but had one egg with yoke and white for that great egg taste and had the other egg with just the white.

Now, lets look at the math. One complete egg = 200 milligrams of cholesterol. One egg with just white = 0 milligrams of cholesterol. So we still eat our two eggs and still get that great egg taste, but now we only take in 200 milligrams of cholesterol which is well under our daily cap. We even have 100 milligrams to spare..."pass me some meat please." So there we have it. We got our two eggs, we got yoke, and we burned fat at the same time. Yeah, we're good.

Here are some other foods we will visit in-depth over the next few weeks:

Healthy Diet Means Healthy Food

We all want to be healthy, and to achieve that, we need to follow a healthy diet. But what if the food we need are expensive? This could be the question that Americans may have formed in their minds when they read a recently conducted and published study last week. A study spearheaded by lead researcher and assistant professor from the Department of Epidemiology and the School of Public Health at the University of Washington concluded that the government should assist more consumers to develop the habit of eating healthy foods.

Last year, the so-called Food Pyramid of 2010 was released for the public's knowledge and information. In the said pyramid, it was explained that to be healthier, there is a need to consume more foods rich in potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin D and calcium. Lately, however, there were reports though those foods rich in these elements are actually costly. Studies say that the average American household that plan to add more potassium-rich food in their family's his diet will mean adding around $380.00 more a year to their grocery bills.

Another study was conducted and published in the Health Journal wherein respondents cited what food they ate, and their responses were analyzed for nutrient content and estimated cost. Random telephone surveys were conducted among 2,000 adults in King Country, Washington followed by a printed questionnaire that was sent back by about 1,300 people.

In general, the study had the following results: the more people spend, the more they are able to meet federal guidelines set for potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin D and calcium. In contrast, those who spend less had low intake of the four elements recently cited. At the same time, they had high consumption for foods with saturated fat and added sugar.

The findings regarding Americans that have high consumption for foods with saturated fat and added sugar is alarming. It is also alarming because most at this time, younger people become more drawn to eating the said kind of foods.

There are reports lately that because of their access to fast-food items, people getting afflicted with obesity are getting younger. In fact there is now a term called childhood obesity and it is becoming an alarming concern. Obesity becomes a major cause of worry because children seem to have access to unhealthy, caloric and sweetened beverages. They get these from school cafeterias, fast food restaurants and mall stalls.

When we talk of solutions, we talk of where the solution should start and come from. If charity begins at home, then the cure to obesity should start at home.

The first step could actually be setting the right atmosphere for a gradual change in food menus. For parents, before imposing a radical change in the food to be served to the children, a little warming up should be done.

Begin by organizing picnics or backyard cook outs. In these locations, the right food can be cooked before the children's eyes so that they can sense that fast food is not really good food. Leave the impression that home cooking is still the best sauce of cooked food.

This can be followed by asking the children to help out in the preparation of food ingredients before cooking. Cleaning and slicing fish and poultry, washing vegetables and fruits, are not only useful activities but can also be an entry for introducing the basic food groups found in the pyramid. By such helpful tasks, nutritive value of foods can be explained and the preparation can be compared to the style of food storage and preparation in fast foods. (Frozen chicken can lose the freshness and flavour if stored for periods).

Bringing the children or young adults outdoors where they can experience fishing in rivers and streams, harvesting fruits or vegetables and visiting poultries may introduce and orient to the "earthly" quality of food. That artificial and synthetic food ingredient is not only unhealthy but they are also generated from unnatural sources.

Parents should practice what they preach. Most of the time, this proves to be a very difficult task. But for parents, teaching children to stay away from junk food or fatty, sweet and calorie-laden foods can be done easily if the parents themselves stay away from these kinds of food too. Some parents practice a double standard when it comes to eating healthy and nutritious foods. They sometimes oblige their children to cut down on sweets but they are seen stealing unhealthy foods into their bedroom or TV room when no one in the house is awake anymore.

Healthy Food Tips: Top 5 Protein Rich Foods for a Healthy Body

Whether you want to improve your overall health, lose body fat, or build lean muscle, adding protein rich foods to your diet is an excellent choice. Protein keeps you feeling full longer and supports muscle growth. This essential nutrient stimulates the development of new cells, enhances hormone production, and helps tired muscles recover. Unlike fat and carbohydrates, protein is not stored for energy production. Active individuals need 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram body weight each day. A healthy diet should include quality protein, either from animal or plant sources.

Here are top five foods rich in protein:

Eggs

Eggs provide over six grams of protein per ounce. They also contain all of the essential amino acids. For breakfast, lunch, or even a quick dinner, they are one of the easiest protein dishes to prepare. Researchers have found that people who eat eggs daily have a lower risk of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, and breast cancer. Studies have shown that there is no link between heart disease and egg consumption.

Canned Tuna

If you're looking for a high protein food that has a great taste and can be easily prepared in different ways, go for canned tuna. It is low in fat and carbohydrates and provides a good amount of protein along with several other important nutrients. Canned tuna contains up to 49.81 grams of protein per can. It is also an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which strengthen the immune system and help prevent muscle loss.

Lobster

Lobster contains 19 grams of protein in a 100 gram serving. It is also low in fat and calories. Lobster tail is packed with vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, zinc, potassium, iron, and amino acids.

Chicken Breast

High in protein and ultra-low in fat, chicken breast is a preferred choice for many athletes and bodybuilders. This type of meat contains B vitamins, phosphorus, and tryptophan. By adding chicken breast to your diet, you will keep your heart healthy and have better control over your weight.

Tofu

Tofu is rich in essential amino acids. One half-cup serving of tofu contains 10 grams of protein and 94 calories. This food is also a great source of calcium and iron. Many brands of tofu are made from organic soybeans and have the same price as conventionally produced varieties. Many people believe that tofu is nutritious enough to replace meat. Research indicates that a diet rich in tofu helps prevent breast cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and osteoporosis.

The latest healthy food tips can help you learn more about good nutrition and improve your diet. At DSM Food, you will find out how to stay healthy, lose weight, and save money on your favorite foods.

Potassium Rich Foods and Healthy Eating

"Healthy" is a term that many people use lightly. Some people think that if they do not eat fast food everyday and if they try to eat a few vegetables every once in a while that they can consider this "healthy eating". Many people do not want to eat the required fruits and vegetables simply because of how much you would actually have to eat to be healthy. But what most don't realize is that potassium and calcium as well as many other minerals and vitamins are in these foods. Without proper amounts of potassium, your body will undergo unhealthy changes. Severe headaches, anxiety, irregular heartbeat, weakness, and fatigue are all symptoms that can result from potassium deficiency. Therefore it is best to keep up on your potassium rich foods on a regular basis. Foods rich in potassium can be tasty as well as easy to eat if you choose some of your favorites, of which there are bound to be a few. Potassium rich foods are generally found in fruits and vegetables, but veal is worth almost 300mg for one serving. Here are a few others to think about eating daily.

1 cup of cantaloupe is worth almost 500 mg, so if you ate 7 cups a day you would have your daily intake covered. However, many people don't want to eat a lot of the same food, so try one of these: 5 dates are worth 270mg, the same as eating 2 figs. One cup of lima beans at supper gives you almost 1,000mg, and one cup of honeydew melon as a snack gives you another 460mg. One cup of skim milk or fat free milk is worth 407mg of potassium, and 1 orange is worth 237mg. A cup of cooked spinach is worth 840mg, so eating only a few of these foods daily will help you reach a healthy amount daily. Potassium is an essential part of keeping the balance of water in a human body. Therefore if you do not take in enough potassium you can become dehydrated and taking in too much potassium can cause you to gain water weight. A balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables will help keep your potassium levels healthy. Once you start getting your recommended daily dosage on a regular basis you may find that you feel better and then you can truly say that you have begun to engage in healthy eating.

Include potassium rich foods in your diet today for healthy eating. Visit our site today for a list of foods rich in potassium.
