High Blood Pressure Diet - Foods To Eat And To Avoid To Reduce Hypertension Without Medication!

High blood pressure is an insidious chronic disease, because it usually doesn't show any obvious clinical symptoms, at least in the beginning. When there are symptoms, they usually include headaches, fatigue, palpitations and lack of mental concentration. The most serious damage caused by hypertension usually occurs in the heart, kidneys and brain.

The heart is likely to show left ventricular hypertrophy, arrhythmias and heart failure. The kidneys may also be burdened by hypertension, but the severity of the problem depends on the type of hypertension (benign or malignant). Complications in the brain occur in approximately 25% of hypertensive patients and usually include a cerebral or subarachnoid haemorrhage and thrombosis due to ischemia.

How can diet help you in the treatment of hypertension?

Nearly 50% of people who have hypertension are sensitive to salt, which means that the increased sodium intake greatly increases their blood pressure and puts them at risk for various complications. It has been estimated that the average adult consumes about 10 grams of salt instead of the 4 grams that are recommended by international health organizations. According to estimations, 85% of the salt we consume is contained in prepared foods and table salt is only 15% of the salt we eat. Sodium is found in a great variety of foods. The foods that contain significant amounts of sodium are meat, fish, poultry and dairy products. Smaller amounts of sodium are also contained in vegetables and cereals.

In short, here are the foods that you need to avoid, if you suffer from hypertension: artichokes, carrots, celery, cress, spinach, beets, radishes, pineapple, canned fruits, canned vegetables, pickles, salted butter, crackers, chips, salted nuts, ham, salty meats, smoked or canned meats, cheese, ham, baking soda, soy sauce and full-fat dairy products.

On the contrary you can safely eat fresh fish and meats, olive oil, vinegar, fresh fruits, dried beans, low-fat milk, unsalted nuts, honey, pasta and rice.

Additionally, several epidemiological studies show an inverse relationship between the levels of blood pressure and the dietary intake of potassium. The evidence indicates that high intake of potassium can lead to a significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. According to a study, people who consumed a low amount of potassium were 2.6 times more likely to die from a stroke. Potassium may reduce blood pressure by removing sodium from the body through urine.

Potassium-rich foods are peaches, apricots, pears, kiwi, pumpkins, zucchini, tomatoes, potatoes, bananas, oranges, avocados, figs, grapes, grapefruit, sweet potatoes, beans, raisins, plums, strawberries, watermelon, asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, beans and walnuts.

Food to Avoid With High Blood Pressure

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects nearly 1 in 3 adults according to the American Heart Association. Hypertension is associated with poor lifestyle habits, primarily poor nutrition, obesity, smoking, heavy drinking of alcohol, inactivity, and chronic stress. High blood pressure left untreated and without lifestyle changes can cause serious damage to the kidneys, the heart, and the walls of the arteries which can put you at greater risk of heart attack and stroke.

Poor nutrition is an underlying cause of many diseases, illnesses, and chronic conditions such as high cholesterol and obesity which have been linked to high blood pressure. Knowing which food to avoid with high blood pressure will greatly reduce cholesterol levels, improve weight loss and lower high blood pressure naturally. By making small changes to your diet each day can lead you to better health.

Food to avoid with high blood pressure:

High sodium foods - foods with high salt content like soy sauce, steak sauce, salad dressings, ketchup, barbeque sauce, and mustard.

Pantry items such as bouillon cubes, meat tenderizer, garlic and onion salts, baking powder, baking soda, canned soups and vegetables

Smoked and cure meats - ham, bacon, corned beef, luncheon meats.

Salted snacks - any chips, pretzels, nuts and seeds.

Pickled foods - anything in salted brine like herring, olives, pickles, sauerkraut.

Dairy - Most cheese spreads and cheeses.

Ready to eat - Frozen dinners, pizza, instant noodles with sauce mixes, boxed rice mixes, and of course fast food.

These foods are high in sodium and some are high in saturated fats. Excess sodium levels cause the body to retain water, therefore increasing blood volume. Saturated fats are known to cause hardening of the arteries where the diameter of the inside of the arteries is made smaller. An increase in blood volume along with narrower arteries causes the heart to pump harder to force the blood through which increases blood pressure.

Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Particularly foods rich in potassium. Potassium has a relationship to sodium where they balance each other. Too much sodium, as in the typical American diet, is weak on potassium rich foods. Limit high fat foods to lower your risk of developing other forms of cardiovascular disease. Exercising strengthens the body's blood vessels in contracting and expanding, as well as strengthens the heart muscle.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, just doesn't happen overnight. High blood pressure can develop over years, progressing without any noticeable symptoms. There are other factors that can put you at increased risk to developing hypertension such as age, race, genetics, and environmental conditions, but poor daily choices and habits can increase the likelihood of you developing this condition. Regular blood pressure screenings will detect hypertension easily. If you already have high blood pressure, then by avoiding these foods will help lower your blood pressure.

Hypertension, commonly referred to as "the silent killer", can be controlled naturally. You don't have to live with high blood pressure. Visit Nature's Wisdom for healthful alternatives to lowering your blood pressure naturally.

Sodium in Foods

To lose weight you need to avoid salt and salty food. Eat low sodium food instead. Potassium-rich food and drink will also help because potassium displaces sodium from the body.

If you find it hard to cut down on salt, do it gradually. Your taste will gradually change. Try using pepper, herbs such as basil, chives, lemon grass, rosemary or coriander, spices such as chilli or ginger, balsamic vinegar or lemon juice, rather than salt, to add flavour to your food.

If you usually use stock cubes or oxo cubes when you are making soup or stew or a casserole, remember these contain a lot of salt. - Why not try using a small glass of wine to add flavour instead of using the high salt cubes?

If you feel you must use salt in cooking or to sprinkle on your food, you could try using LoSalt or Solo Low Sodium Sea Salt. - These mineral salts contain only about a third of the sodium present in ordinary salt and taste very similar to salt. This is still a high proportion of sodium, so use as little as you can manage and try gradually to reduce the amount you use.

In the USA there are other mineral salts that you can buy. One is called AlsoSalt and it contains no sodium at all so it is a good salt substitute for people needing to reduce sodium, but it still should be used in moderation. Another is called Nu-Salt and it also contains no sodium at all.

All of these salt substitutes have websites where you can read about them in greater detail. You should not use any of these salt substitutes if you have been told to minimise your potassium intake.

These mineral salts should be avoided by people who take certain medications, such as ACE inhibitors, which are used to lower blood pressure. And if you have kidney failure, you should not use a mineral salt without medical advice. But if you have kidney failure, you should already have been advised about restricting salt intake.

If you use convenience foods or eat ready meals, read the labels to find the lowest sodium/salt content. Choose canned vegetables marked 'no added salt' and products such as tuna canned in water, rather than in brine or oil.

To convert sodium content to salt content, multiply the sodium by 2.5.

On labels, more than 0.5g of sodium (1.25g salt) per 100g is high, less than 0.2g sodium (0.5g salt) is low.

Foods That Lower Blood Pressure - 3 Delicious and Healthy Foods To Lower Your Blood Pressure

Hypertension, which is characterized by consistently high blood pressure level readings, is often caused by an unhealthy diet, among other factors. With that in mind, we always suggest that the first step in the treatment of hypertension is to look at your diet to determine where you may have gone wrong with it. And then, you must incorporate the following foods that lower blood pressure levels to healthy readings.

If you already love these foods, your transition from an unhealthy to a healthy diet will be easier. Just make sure that you will still practice moderation in the consumption of these foods as overeating can lead to weight loss, among other consequences. Eat only the amount of food necessary at the right time.

The first of the top three delicious foods that lower hypertension are nuts and seeds. Well, it's not a single food but let's not quibble over details. The most important thing is that nuts and seeds, maybe even add a few beans into the mix, are rich in magnesium.

If your doctor has yet to inform you, magnesium is an important mineral in the maintenance of healthy blood pressure levels. Thus, if you want to treat hypertension, magnesium is your friend. Eat unsalted flower seeds, almonds and walnuts for their high magnesium content.

Second, you must also look into bananas as one of the foods that lower blood pressure. The long, yellow and soft fruit may be humble in appearance but it packs a punch in potassium. If you can still remember your nutrition classes, the mineral potassium has close links with sodium.

Look at it this way: When your potassium levels are low, your body retains higher levels of sodium. In turn, too much sodium in the body elevates blood pressure. But when your potassium levels are high, your body is better able to eliminate sodium and your hypertension slowly returns to normal levels. Other potassium-rich foods that lower blood pressure include baked white potato and soybeans.

And if you have a sweet tooth, you will love the third food that can lower blood pressure level - dark chocolate. Just make sure of two things: one, it is pure, dark chocolate without the sugars and milk and; two, you must stick to just 30 calories a day from dark chocolate.

Top 5 Healthiest Super Foods to Boost Your Metabolism and Burn Fat

As the saying goes, we are what we eat!

The most common causes of obesity are poor nutrition and/or eating habits and a lack of physical activity. Some additional factors that can lead to obesity include stress, diabetes, emotional eating, boredom, blood-sugar imbalances, and hypothyroidism. Obesity has also been associated with food sensitivities and/or allergies. However, it is the consumption of nutrient-poor foods that makes it much harder for your body to burn fat and thus accumulates in the body. That is why it is essential to eat nutrient-dense foods that will boost your metabolism and burn fat easily and efficiently.

Top 5 Healthiest Super Foods

1. Water- The human body is two-thirds water, and water is vital to your health. Water keeps our cells hydrated, removes harmful toxins, and carries nutrients and waste products in and out of cells. Water also plays a key role in the metabolic breakdown of proteins and carbohydrates.

2. Apples- are a rich source of fiber, carbohydrates, phytonutrients, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, and water (roughly 80%). The flavonoid quercetin and vitamin C are potent antioxidants that boost the immune system and may help ward off asthma attacks, atherosclerosis, and various cancers. Apples contain high amounts of a soluble fiber called pectin, which promotes regularity and helps lower potentially harmful LDL blood cholesterol levels. Apples also contain potassium, thus may help prevent high blood pressure and stroke. The high water content in apples keep the body hydrated and encourages cleansing and detoxification.

3. Quinoa- is a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids. Quinoa is also a great source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, calcium, and iron; and a good source of manganese, copper, magnesium (relaxes blood vessels), phosphorus, and lysine. Protein-rich foods can increase your metabolic rate by as much as 35%.

4. Almonds- are one of the best whole food sources of vitamin E. Almonds are also a good source of calcium, fiber, protein, some B vitamins, potassium, zinc, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, as well as cancer-fighting amygdalin (B17) and kaempferol; Almonds are a valuable source of monounsaturated fat, too (the good fat). Other possible health benefits include weight loss and reduced risk for diabetes.

5. Microalgae- (spirulina and chlorella) are incredibly nutrient-dense superfoods. Both chlorella and spirulina contain numerous health enhancing substances, such as chlorophyll and high quality complete balanced protein; all the B vitamins; omega-3 fatty acids, beta carotene, and nucleic acids (RNA & DNA); and important minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and zinc. Chlorella and spirulina are beneficial for the immune system, cleansing and detoxification (esp. heavy metals), intestinal health, nervous system disorders, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and much more.

Most important, I would like to suggest organic whole foods whenever possible to help prevent unnecessary exposure to pesticides, antibiotics, hormones, and other toxic chemicals that are added to our food supply on a daily basis.

Connection Between Potassium Deficiency and High Blood Pressure

Most people know that high sodium contributes to high blood pressure (hypertension), but did you know that low potassium can also contribute to high pressure? Potassium blunts the effects of sodium and helps the body to normalize blood pressure.

"Scientists began studying the effects of potassium on high pressure as early as 1928. Now a major study of 300 nurses shows that potassium can lower your pressure even if it's in the normal range. Good sources of potassium are dried apricots, avocados, dried figs, acorn squash, baked potatoes, kidney beans, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, and bananas. You can also buy potassium supplements. If you're taking a diuretic, your body is getting rid of potassium along with fluid." Frank K. Wood says "When it comes to lowering blood pressure, potassium packs a powerful punch," in Natural Cures and Gentle Medicines That Work Better Than Dangerous Drugs or Risky Surgery.

"Low potassium is a major cause of cardiac arrhythmia; diuretics for the treatment of high pressure or congestive heart failure may interfere with potassium absorption and excretion. Although potassium supplementation is usually not necessary, individuals on diuretics or laxatives or who have excessive diarrhea may require extra potassium." Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra, MD, in A Cardiologist's Prescription for Optimum Health explains "Since potassium is necessary to the healthy functioning of nerves, cells, and membranes, it is an important electrolyte to monitor,"

In the New Encyclopedia of Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements and Herbs, Nicola Reavley also points out the important role of potassium in controlling high blood pressure: "Many population studies have found links between low potassium intakes and an increased risk of high pressure and death from stroke. Increasing the amount of potassium-rich foods in the diet can lead to a reduction in high blood pressure. The ratio of sodium to potassium in the diet appears to play an important role in the development of high blood pressure. The typical Western diet is low in potassium relative to sodium."

The best way to get more potassium in your diet is to eat more potassium-rich foods such as apples, apricots, bananas, broccoli, carrots, lima beans, oranges, potatoes, prunes, spinach, squash, and watermelon.

It is always better to avoid processed food that are rich in sodium while eating fruits and vegetables. It seems foods that contain high potassium is suppose to be vegetables and fruits. A large amount of sodium can be found in a can of soup. It is always advised to read food labels.

Blood pressure can be lowered naturally by eating more fruits and vegetables and less processed food. Increasing the intake of fiber and reducing the food based on fat and cholesterol will also lower your pressure.

People who have high pressure should follow a regular exercise routine. Alternatively you can start a simple exercise program in your home. You need not to hit gym. This will actually lower pressure.

Why We Need Potassium To Stay Healthy

The Adequate intake for potassium is pretty high at 4,700mg per day. Many people actually don't have enough potassium in their diets which is the reason the Adequate Intake level has been set so high.

Dietary programs that are higher in potassium can lead to a decreased risk of stroke, an increase in bone density, less chance of developing kidney stones and lower blood pressure.

Potassium plays a large role in making sure our muscles function properly. The majority of the potassium ions in our bodies are found inside the muscle cells. If you encounter muscle cramps, it could be due to a potassium deficiency.

Brain functionality is yet another area that needs potassium. It is required in higher brain functions like memory and learning. It's also vital that those who suffer from anxiety or stress are consuming a sufficient amount of potassium. Potassium is actually sometimes taken as a treatment for stress or anxiety.

It also helps to decrease blood pressure. It can also effect your blood sugar levels. If you are consuming enough potassium, it could result in a drop in your blood sugar.

Kidney stones can occasionally be caused by the overuse of supplements, however in the case of potassium it is believed that it can actually stop kidney stones from developing.

Potassium is also essential for keeping your skin healthy, maintaining your body water balance and regulating your heartbeats.

I'm sure you agree that potassium is vital and we need to be sure we are consuming enough of it. There are some potential side effects that can be brought on by potassium. They are rare and they usually only occur when excessive amounts of potassium are consumed.

These include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and intestinal gas. If you're taking an excessive amount of potassium then you could experience feelings of general weakness, paralysis, burning or tingling, wooziness, general confusion, low blood pressure and even potentially death.

It really is actually quite hard to be ingesting too much potassium from your diet alone but it really is worth baring these potential side effects in mind just to be on the safe side.

Foods that are potassium rich include bananas, chicken, pork dates, figs, kiwi, orange, trout, tuna, cod, halibut, beef, chia seeds, almonds, beans and peanuts. These are just some of many good sources of potassium.

As you can see you have a decent number of options so you have no excuses.

Chia seeds are rich in potassium as well as other healthy minerals. To learn more about chia seeds, head over to Chia Seeds HQ.

Super Foods - Are They a Myth Or a Reality?

In the health conscious society that we live in, almost everyone knows the concept of super foods. But what are super foods? Well, the concept of super foods was popularized by doctor Steven Pratt, among other like minded doctors, who claimed specific foods have advanced benefits for the body. Although some nutritionists dispute this allegation, the super foods concept gains more popularity with each passing day. Luckily, all foods in the super foods category are beneficial to the body in some way. Whether the high nutrition foods branding is just a marketing gimmick or not is left to the consumers to decide.

Blue berries: These are considered super foods due to their high amounts of antioxidants, potassium, Vitamin C and phytoflavinoids. Regular consumption of the blue berries is said to lower the risks for cancer and heart disease considerably. They also have anti-inflammatory properties

Fish: cold-water fish contains Omega 3 fatty acids, which contain monounsaturated fats thus providing people with the best bet on lowering their cholesterol levels. Ideally, the best source of omega 3 is from wild salmons, sardines, mackerel and herrings. A healthy adult should take at least three servings of such every week.

Soy: Soy is flaunted as a suitable drug alternative for lowering cholesterol levels

Fiber foods: All foods help check cholesterol levels and helps in weight management

Tea: super foods experts claim that tea, whether green or black, has cancer inhibiting properties. Further, green tea has powerful antioxidant properties, which are ideal in lowering cholesterol in the human body.

Calcium rich foods: In addition to dairy products, one can take calcium supplements. Calcium helps the body build stronger bones and further prevents age-set osteoporosis. Ideally, people aged between nine and 18 years should take 1300 mg of calcium daily, while those aged between 19 to 50 years should take 1,000 mg calcium daily. People aged above 51 years should take 1200 mg calcium daily.

Observing the nutrition sector today, one would easily get confused understanding the entire concept of super foods. While some people use the above named foods, others include tomatoes, walnuts, pumpkins, turkey, oranges, broccoli, spinach, yogurt and beans. This then begs the question, just what are superfoods?

Proponents of this concept define such foods as any dietary item that has increased health benefits to the body and the mind, while having no side effects at all. Physical benefits include lower cholesterol, lower risks of cancer and heart disease. More to this, the foods are said to benefit the mind by improving the performance of the brain cells.

This definition hopefully provided enough insight to answer the question, what are super foods. The bottom line of their concept lies in the belief that food items in this category contain disease-fighting properties beneficial to the human body.

There is a reason that potassium is what is known as an 'essential' mineral, and that is because our bodies need it in order to survive. We require it in larger quantities than most other minerals, many of which are known as 'trace' minerals.

Just to quickly highlight how important potassium is, the average adult requires 4,700 milligrams of potassium every single day, but they only need 18 milligrams of iron, quite a difference.

Millions of people don't have the first idea when it comes to the total amount of each vitamin and mineral that they should be consuming each day, and thus suffer from some sort of nutritional deficiency.

Learning which nutrients are found in which foods is a brilliant way to bring a steady routine to your diet, one that is going to be nutritionally beneficial to your health.

Potassium Gluconate Replenishes Your Body's Electrolyte and Water Content After Physical Exercise

Potassium gluconate is produced from gluconic acid in combination with a loosely-bound salt of potassium, an important mineral necessary for the proper function of all living cells. It is found in all plant and animal tissues especially in plant cells with high concentration in fruits. It can also be found in a well-balanced diet.

Potassium gluconateis needed for normal bodily functions such as normal heartbeat, nerve conduction, muscle contraction and normal kidney functions.

It is found in many electrolyte compounds along with sodium, calcium, magnesium, hydrogen phosphate and hydrogen carbonate that help replenish the body's electrolyte and water content. This explains why certain potassium-rich energy drinks are given to people who experience body weakness due to certain illnesses, strenuous physical exercise, and excessive alcohol intake that depletes the potassium and water content of the body.

Potassium gluconate is an organic potassium salt that is best taken as a dietary supplement. It can be purchased in liquid or tablet form over the counter or as a prescription medication by your doctor.

Potassium, the primary component of potassium gluconate is the third most abundant mineral in the body after calcium and phosphorus. It is one of the primary electrolytes in the body that transport positive electrical charges to the blood and cells. It maintains the proper balance and distribution of water in the body as well as its acid-base balance, it promotes the proper function of the body's muscle and nerve cells as well as proper functions of the heart, kidneys and adrenal glands.

Along with other electrolytes in the body, potassium is used to transmit nerve impulses, initiate muscle contractions and regulate heartbeat and blood pressure. It regulates the amount of fluid inside the cells while sodium regulates the amount outside the cells. These harmonious functions of potassium and sodium explain how the body achieves the balance of fluid levels in the body.

Potassium also helps the body convert its primary source of energy, glucose, into another form of energy called glycogen which is stored in the muscles and in the liver.

To maintain your body's supply of electrolytes and achieve proper balance of fluid level, you need to eat foods that are rich in potassium such as squash, baked potatoes with the skin on, spinach, lentils, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, zucchini, kidney or navy beans, raisins, watermelon, orange juice, bananas, cantaloupe, and low-fat milk or yogurt.

Foods That Lower High Blood Pressure

It might be hard to believe that there are actually foods that lower high blood pressure, but it is true. There are actually a number of foods that can do just that. Sure, you will still need to do things like exercise and cut out salt, but it can be a great benefit to you to start lowering your blood pressure naturally. If you are prescribed blood pressure medicine, these foods will not eliminate the need for you to continue taking it, but if you have borderline high blood pressure and don't yet need medication or you still need help even with your medication, then eating some of the foods outlined in this article might just be the answer you are looking for.

Drinking skim milk daily can help reduce your blood pressure up to ten percent. This milk is low in fat, but very high in Vitamin D and calcium, both of which are known to combat high blood pressure. Calcium can also be found in sardines, salmon, nuts, sunflower seeds (unsalted), and dark green leafy vegetables. Magnesium rich foods such as beans and spinach are also an excellent way to lower blood pressure. Other good sources of magnesium are figs, grapefruit, yellow corn, whole grains, almonds, and apples. Dark chocolate is great for helping to lower the blood pressure and satisfying a sweet tooth at the same time. The flavonoids in dark chocolate have been found to cause a noticeable drop in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings. Potassium rich foods such as bananas, soybeans, oranges, watermelon, spinach, zucchini, and baked white potatoes are another very good food for maintaining a lower blood pressure, as potassium helps the body rid itself of extra fluid so that the heart does not need to pump as hard. Research also shows that eating foods high in fiber, such as oat bran, fruits, and vegetables can significantly reduce high blood pressure, and even improve blood pressure in healthy individuals. Omega-3 fats, typically found in oily fish and flaxseeds, are known to have a lowering effect on blood pressure, as is garlic.

All in all, there are a number of foods that lower high blood pressure. Since there are a number of vegetables on the list, there are a number of meals that can be made combining them with fish, poultry, and lean meat that would greatly benefit people suffering with high blood pressure. Snacking on fruits high in magnesium, potassium, or calcium and the occasional dark chocolate can be an excellent way to curb hunger between meals while still managing your blood pressure. With skim milk and oat bran on the list as well as fruit, there are enough different foods that can lower your blood pressure to eat one at every meal without having to eat the same thing every day. Some studies have shown that eating enough of these foods in the right combination can be as effective as medicine for some people. Just remember to let your doctor determine whether you need medication and never adjust your dose yourself, even if your blood pressure is lowered by your diet.

Potassium for Our Body - Everything You Need to Know

Minerals are very essential ingredients that help not only in the growth but also in the sustenance of the human body. Potassium is one of those vital minerals that are absolutely essential for our body. But very few people are aware of this fact and hence face many symptoms of low potassium in their bodies. You should look into a list of potassium rich foods, to maintain your potassium levels.

So let us first look into the functions of potassium in our body. Firstly, potassium maintains the fluid balance of our body. It has an important role to play in cell integrity. It also helps in the production of proteins in our body and supports the contraction of our muscles. It maintains the pH balance of our body as well. Most importantly perhaps it is required for the transmission of nerve impulses to the different local parts of the human body. Hence deficiency of potassium in our body might have very critical problems if not properly dealt with.

Hypoglycemia or a fall in the blood sugar can be caused by the deficiency of potassium. Weaknesses of the muscles, constipation, abdominal cramping and sciatica are also caused due to low levels of potassium in the body. Fatigue, confusion and irritation are some other symptoms of low potassium in our bodies. Deficiency of potassium can also have some serious effects like high blood pressure level that can cause a stroke, paralysis of limbs and other body parts and a cardiac arrest which might even be fatal.

One of the important benefits of potassium is its ability to keep a check on the blood pressure level of a person that is the root cause of many diseases in human beings. Potassium along with sodium helps to maintain and regulate the water balance of our body as well. Minerals also help in the proper functioning of the tissues that make up the nervous system of the human body. It also helps to increase the control over our muscles and regulates the waste product removal from our body thus contributing to the growth and development of the cells. The benefits of potassium also include the prevention of stone formation in our kidneys by filtering them regularly. Potassium supplies oxygen to the brain that is very essential for the proper functioning of the brain.

As you can see, it is very important to maintain an adequate amount of Potassium in your system. Look to fruits like the Banana which are loaded with potassium, in addition to which there are very few calories in Banana, so it doubles as low carb and high potassium.

Potassium Supplements - Relieving The Body Of Pain

Potassium is an important mineral for the effective functioning of tissues, cells and other organs of the body. Just like chloride, calcium and sodium, potassium is important for the body as it helps in effective functioning of the heart and other bodily functions. Foods which contain good amounts of magnesium include dairy products, figs, legumes and so on. Elderly people suffer from problems of the kidney, thanks to the diuretics they take. Some of the inflammatory and non-steroidal drugs may lead to low potassium in the body.

Irrespective of the age, it is important to speak to your doctor before taking potassium supplements. Old people experience bone related problems, when there is deficiency of potassium in the body. Low potassium in the body also may results in irregular heartbeat, stomach related problems and muscle cramps. Hypokalemia is a condition when the body loses the potassium content and this condition needs to be treated immediately. Low potassium levels may also lead to cardiac related problems, hence physicians generally advise potassium supplements for individuals suffering from hypertension.

Those of you who suffer from inflammatory bowel diseases may have problems in absorption of essential nutrients and the potassium will get washed away. This is when potassium supplements come to the rescue. Natural sources of potassium are citrus fruits like orange, tomatoes, cod, potatoes, flounder and so on. Potassium supplements are available in the form of granules, capsules, liquids and powders. This is also available in multivitamins.

These supplements need to be taken under the supervision of the doctor. It is advised that you refrain from purchasing over the counter medication. Lack or deficiency of potassium may result in nausea, stomach irritation and diarrhoea. People suffering from kidney diseases should not take potassium supplements. People who go on fad diets should bear in mind that their diet is rich in potassium, or else they may experience fatigue and tiredness. Vegetables like carrots, tomatoes, broccoli have high potassium levels.

Last but not the least, the diet plans available in the market is simple and easy to follow. One need not have to make any major changes in the daily lifestyle. The best way to ensure that your body gets the right nutrients is by taking potassium rich foods. Other side effects of potassium deficiency include heart palpitations, heart failure and chronic heart ailments. Potassium supplements may not be easily digested by the body like natural sources, hence you need to take them only after consulting your physician.

Consuming potassium supplements regularly will surely help you remain healthy and fit. Potassium is one such mineral which helps in regulating the fluid levels in the body. Dry fruits like apricots, raisins contain rich amounts of potassium. Try and eat vegetables and fruit peels as they contain good amount of potassium.

It is necessary to imbibe all natural vitamin supplements along with potassium supplements when you are recovering from an illness as per the author.

Potassium to Cure Gout

Gout is one of the most painful types of arthritis. I know this for a fact. When you're in the midst of an attack, you feel a stabbing, throbbing pain in your afflicted joint and it's almost impossible to put any pressure on it. A gout attack can be triggered by years of elevated uric acid (UA) condition. Now there are basically three components you may want to look at for curing gout or treating a gout attack: minimizing UA production, maximizing UA excretion and minimizing the pain during an attack. For this article, we will explore the second one and how Potassium (or potassium rich foods) is involved.

The normal range for UA is 3.4 - 7 (based on my last medical results) although I read that you can have gout with as low as 6. In my case, my UA was at 8.26. Being above the range means that not enough UA is being eliminated through the urine than what is being produced. We call this condition hyperuricemia. As a result of this, excess uric acids are crystallized and deposited in various joint spaces, causing the inflammation or gout attack.

If we want to force an equation just to visualize the condition, here's a rough way of looking at it.

If Uric Acid > 6, then

Uric Acid Production - Uric Acid Excretion = Uric Acid Crystals

Potassium's role in this equation is in Uric Acid Excretion. As it happens, uric acid is barely water soluble. Thus although you will read that drinking lots of water helps the condition, it is not enough. To make UA more soluble, the body has to be alkalized and potassium is one of the best counters for UA. Potassium helps by liquefying uric acid crystals so that these can be flushed out through the urine.

That said, gout sufferers should have a diet rich in potassium. The RDA for potassium is 4,200 milligrams. My favorite source is bananas. Each one can have 300 to 451 mg of potassium. That's why you would see some websites recommending eating 6-8 bananas. In the height of a gout attack, other foods high in potassium include: Milk, Prunes, Tomatoes, Vegetables, Potatoes and Berries.

When looking for high potassium foods, try to cross reference it with the high purine list. I wouldn't stock up on those. All meats have high potassium, but some have high purine content as well. For myself though, I choose bananas as my best source since it also has Vitamin C. Remember though that Potassium is a key component, but it's not everything you need to battle gout.

5 Fruits and Vegetables High in Potassium

Fruits and vegetables are one of the best sources for getting heart-healthy potassium. Because potassium is found naturally in fruits and vegetables, it is highly absorbable and can be used by the body in a variety of ways. Potassium is a mineral and electrolyte that regulates blood pressure as well as muscle function. Symptoms of a potassium deficiency are muscle weakness, aches, cramps, nausea, anxiousness, drowsiness, weakness, and an irregular heart beat. However consuming an adequate amount of potassium is not too difficult if a few easy foods are consumed with regularity. I have put together a compilation in no particular order of 5 (okay maybe 6) fruits and vegetables that are high in potassium. Enjoy.

1. Bananas - 422 mg Let's just get the most obvious one out of the way, bananas are famous for their potassium content but are also high in the vitally important mineral, manganese, as well as both vitamin C and fiber. Here's a tip for peeling a banana; pinch the tip on the end opposite to the "handle" (stem) and peel from that end and you won't have any more bruised bananas. I got this tip by watching monkey's eat bananas on the Discovery Channel.

2. Prunes - 637 mg Although commonly used in cases of 'plumbing problems,' prunes are high in potassium as well as free-radical-busting antioxidants. Oh, and if you've ever wondered why prunes have an almost magical power to relieve constipation, it's because they are high in a natural laxative known as dihydrophenylistatin. Remember that factoid, and later you can really impress your friends!

3. Potatoes - 763 mg Before you justify those frequent trips to McDonalds for a side (meal) of fries let me preface by saying that the heart-healthy attributes of potassium in potatoes can be quickly negated if you add enough hot grease and salt. With that said, potatoes pack some pretty potent potassium (say that 5 times). The starchy tubers are a great source of other nutrients such as Vitamin B6 and manganese. It also has more Vitamin C than most citrus fruits but most is denatured (destroyed) when the spud is cooked. Just in case you are tempted to try and eat the potato raw, don't, you'll end up with a belly ache because the starch in potatoes is only digestible when broken down by heat (cooked).

4. Tomatoes - 292 mg People love to know 'em, grow 'em and throw 'em. For over a hundred years, this fruit (that's right, they actually are a fruit) has been unfortunately included in the lineup of such notorious vegetables as brussel sprouts and broccoli (just kidding, I love both). It actually was an act of congress that led us all down the wrong nomenclature path into calling tomatoes veggies. Way back in 1887, a U.S. tariff law imposed taxes on vegetables but not on fruits. Since our lawmakers weren't really any more honest back then, they reclassified all sorts of fruits as vegetables in order to increase veggie revenue. I wonder if it was called "The Tomato Scandal of 1887" Regardless, to this day, such fruits as tomatoes, cucumbers, and even pumpkins, while technically fruits are considered vegetables. I say leave that debate in the past and focus on what's important; tomatoes are a delicious source of potassium!

5. Spinach - 420 mg Die hard fans may be interested to know that the spinach industry was nearly bankrupt before the cartoon hero "Popeye" came to the rescue. In just a few short years, he had kids happily munching on "me spinach" again and had made spinach farmers rolling in green (money that is, not spinach). While spinach was originally chosen as Popeye's "magic food" for its high iron content, that wasn't the only thing transforming his strength from a wimpy weakling to a hulking hero. The high amounts of potassium in spinach caused his muscle filaments to tighten and relax at proper intervals giving the burley sailor the ability to lift houses, bend steel, wallop Pluto in the kisser, and most importantly, save Olive Oyl from certain doom.

Another Option Now an often overlooked aspect of potassium in the diet is that we should be consuming at least 4,700 mg of this mineral per day. This means eating a lot of bananas, a lot of potatoes, and probably more prunes than those around us would prefer. As a clinical nutrition scientist, I would be hard-pressed to ever suggest alternatives to fruits and vegetables but I will offer a suggestion for upping the potassium intake of those struggling to get enough. Goat milk is an excellent source of natural food-based minerals, such as potassium. When these minerals are gently extracted from the milk, the final product is a concentrated mineral rich food. Just 2 tablespoons of goat milk mineral whey has over 1,000 mg of potassium, which trumps all of the foods listed above. Goat milk mineral whey not only has high levels of potassium but also calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus delivering the health benefits of food based minerals in two spoonfuls. Here's my parting shot; always remember the wise words of Popeye the Sailor Man: "I yam what I yam..." which coincidentally is also a vegetable high in potassium. (820 mg)

Potassium Depletion

General Characteristics

Potassium is a naturally occurring mineral found in every human body and in a wide variety of foods. It is one of the essential substances needed to maintain the body's internal balance of fluids and chemicals. A constant internal environment, in which the various chemicals and fluids are in a state of balance, is necessary if the cells are to carry on their vital functions. Any marked change in the concentration and content of water and chemicals within the body leads to drastic changes that modify our ability to function normally.

The Role of Potassium

Potassium, like sodium, is necessary to human life. The human body requires about equal amounts of both sodium and potassium. The typical American diet, however, provides much more sodium than needed and about the right amount of potassium, which is found in fruits, vegetables, some meats, dairy products and a variety of other foods. In addition, the increasingly popular salt substitutes usually contain potassium as a sodium substitute.

Because potassium is found in sufficient amounts in the average diet, a true dietary deficiency of potassium is very rare. However, hypokalemia, a deficiency of potassium in the blood, may occur under a number of specific circumstances that are unrelated to diet. Certain drugs, especially some of the diuretics used to treat high blood pressure, frequently lead to potassium reduction.

Signs of potassium deficiency include lethargy, muscular weakness, increased nervous irritability, a feeling of mental disorientation and irregular heartbeats. To prevent serious problems, potassium supplements may be recommended, especially if the deficiency is likely to continue, as might be the case in patients taking certain types of diuretics for high blood pressure.

Importance of Balance

Just as too little potassium can have serious consequences, excessive blood levels of potassium also can lead to complications. If the kidneys and circulatory system are functioning properly, it is virtually impossible to produce a dangerously high level of potassium in the blood through diet alone. High potassium levels may occur, however, in patients taking prescribed potassium supplements. But if potassium levels are too high, they must be treated to avoid a possible progression to more serious problems. Therefore, it is imperative that the patient follow the physician's dosage recommendations.

Sources of Potassium

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of potassium for adults is in the range of two to six grams per day, depending on body weight. The average American adult consumes 4.5 grams of potassium per day, which is well within these suggested guidelines. The best dietary sources of potassium are bananas, orange juice, raisins and other dried fruits, meats, peanut butter, bran, dried peas and beans and potatoes. Cocoa, coffee and tea also contain significant amounts of potassium.

Treatment of Potassium Depletion

An estimated two million Americans regularly take potassium supplements. Most are patients with high blood pressure, where potassium levels are lowered by their anti-hypertensive medications. In many instances, increased consumption of potassium-rich foods is all that is required. For others, however, additional potassium in the form of prescription supplements are needed. This is a determination that must be made by a physician.

Summing Up

Potassium is an essential mineral that is found in a variety of foods. The average healthy person consumes adequate potassium. However, it should be noted that a number of diseases and other circumstances, including the use of certain drugs, may upset the body's natural balance of fluids and chemicals and can lead to a potassium imbalance. Unless corrected, this imbalance can have serious consequences.

The Best Ways to Prevent Acne By Eating the Right Foods

There is a general confusion about linking food with acne. Well, there is a connection after all. It's all interlinked actually. I'll try to make it as simple as possible. Different people have different skin types. In fact, your skin type is as unique as your fingerprint.

So, your skin reacts differently with different foods. Like for instant, there are some people, whose skin can adapt to eating more oily food than others. Of course, too much oily food is unhealthy, unless if you consume it in modest amounts.

But it's a different case for those who are suffering from any form of skin blemishes. Some of the common food which they consume could worsen their condition! So, it's really important to know what you eat. I'm going to list out a few good foods that are generally healthy to eat.

It could prevent you from getting acne. For those who have acne, this list is more like a natural treatment for curing it. I'll place the foods in three different categories. They are mainly water, fiber rich food and food high in antioxidants.

Water

I'll start with the basics. It all goes down to drinking water which is our natural resource to help hydrate our bodies. Well, I'm sure that you would have heard that drinking 8 glasses of water every day will help you get rid of toxins. Yes! That's true.

Well, for some it would just need about 6 to 7 glasses a day. Eight glasses of water is just a standard measure. You don't really have to follow that. The most important thing is that you must listen to your body.

So what is a toxin? A toxin is a poisonous substance produced within living cells or organisms. They can be small molecules or proteins which are capable of causing diseases upon contact with or absorption by body tissues interacting with biological macromolecules like enzymes or cellular receptors.

Toxins vary greatly in their severity, ranging from usually minor and acute to almost deadly. I know it sounds a bit medical here, but the bottom line is they are not a good thing to be allowed to build in within our body and that is the thing you must understand.

When your skin becomes dry, it will worsen your acne condition. So how can you tell when your skin is turning dry? It simply means, your body lack enough water. The first sign is dried lips. You can also check the skin on your palms. They are usually very dry and you can see some whitish wrinkling scaly effect. Just rub your fingers and it will be noisy! So do yourself a favor by drinking a glass of water every 2 to 3 hours.

Fiber

Next I'll talk about eating foods rich in fiber. They are commonly found in fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts. Fiber has plenty of benefits as they play an essential part of a healthy diet by adding bulk to your diet, making you feel fuller and also controlling your weight.

Fiber and fiber rich foods help your body digest your food better and prevent constipation. It will help to lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and also may help to prevent, ulcers, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Increasing dietary fiber too quickly can lead to gas, diarrhea, bloating and cramps. You should add fiber to your diet gradually. It is the best approach when you want to include fiber in you diet on a daily basis. Once your body gets accustomed to it, you can start adding other forms of fiber in your diet. So having said that, isn't it justifiable for me to list out a few of these great foods? Here you go.

Fruits:

Dried Figs
Dried Peaches
Dried Apricots
Blueberries
Strawberries
Orange
Apple with skin
Raisins

Grains, cereal and pasta:

Spaghetti, Whole-wheat
Oatmeal
Bread (rye, whole-wheat, mixed-grain, cracked-wheat)
Bran flakes

Legumes, nuts and seeds:

Soybeans
Black beans
Lima beans
Baked beans
Lentils
Almonds
Peanuts
Cashews
Pistachio nuts

Vegetables:

Potato baked with skin
Air-popped popcorn
Corn
Carrot
Peas
Cooked Artichoke
Brussels sprouts
Tomato paste
Boiled Turnip greens

Anti-Oxidants

Eating foods rich in anti-oxidant really matters a lot especially for your skin to remain healthy. They are also linked to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. Antioxidants are nutrients that help protect our cells from damage caused by free radicals which are rogue molecules that attack healthy cells.

So what is a free radical? Let me give you some analogy. It's just like a car which is running on fuel by burning it together with oxygen generated by the pistons. The car runs on this released energy which also gives off exhaust fumes as a by-product. Now this exhaust fumes are definitely not good for the environment.

It's the same thing that happens in the cells of our bodies. When our bodies combine oxygen with glucose, which is our natural body fuel, our cells make energy. But we also make free radicals, which is our body's version of exhaust fumes. Free radicals are created within our bodies as they process food.

But additional free radicals also develop when we are exposed to environmental toxins like, pesticides, dioxins, asbestos, chloroform, chlorine and radiation. Pollutants like, cigarette smoke and air pollution, ultraviolet rays, and even stress. So our best defence against these free radicals is to keep our antioxidant levels as high as possible.

And how can we achieve that? Yes, by eating food that is high in antioxidant. Foods rich in Vitamins A, B, and D as well as those rich in calcium, potassium, phosphorus, chloride, magnesium, zinc, iron and sodium add to my list.

Foods that is rich in Vitamin A:

Milk
Low Fat Yoghurt
Egg Yolks
Liver
Carrots
Sweet Potatoes
Mangoes
Spinach
Dried Apricots
Cantaloupe
Mozzarella cheese

Foods that is rich in Vitamin B:

Liver
Clams, Oysters and Mussels
Octopus
Fish
Fish Eggs
Crab and Lobster
Beef
Mutton (lamb)
Swiss Cheese
Eggs

Foods that is rich in Vitamin D:

Shiitake & Button Mushrooms
Mackerel
Herring
Sardines
Sockeye Salmon
Catfish
Tuna Fish
Cod Liver Oil
Eggs
Sunshine

Ok. Although sunshine is not a food, I have to include it here. That is because getting some fair amount of sunshine daily will increase the intake of Vitamin D in your body.

Beta-Carotene and Zinc

Now you may not have heard this term before, but this would need a separate mention and they are also an antioxidant.

Eating food rich in beta-carotene and zinc will actually not only prevent acne, but also naturally acts as a healing process and anti-scarring of acne. Beta-Carotene is a carotenoid compound responsible for giving fruits and vegetables their orange pigmentation.

It is a powerful antioxidant that has been found to help protect against cancer and aging. Yes! I just mentioned about aging. That's good news for your skin isn't it? Since beta-carotene is a fat soluble vitamin, consuming the following foods with a fat like olive oil or nuts can help absorption.

Foods that is rich in beta-carotene

Lettuce
Dried Herbs (Basil)
Mustard Greens
Turnip Greens
Spinach
Carrots
Sweet Potato

So, there you have it! I've presented here a decent list of foods that can really prevent and cure acne naturally. You may print out this list for your reference. If you find this list too exhaustive, then you can easily find some common foods among this list which almost appear on every category.

They are carrots, fish, eggs, potatoes, spinach, nuts and orange. These items are easily available in every nearby supermarket and they are really cheap too! And to wrap up with all these diet, please supplement with enough water. Just as how important oxygen is for us, so is water for our skin.
