Super Foods - Are They a Myth Or a Reality?

In the health conscious society that we live in, almost everyone knows the concept of super foods. But what are super foods? Well, the concept of super foods was popularized by doctor Steven Pratt, among other like minded doctors, who claimed specific foods have advanced benefits for the body. Although some nutritionists dispute this allegation, the super foods concept gains more popularity with each passing day. Luckily, all foods in the super foods category are beneficial to the body in some way. Whether the high nutrition foods branding is just a marketing gimmick or not is left to the consumers to decide.

Blue berries: These are considered super foods due to their high amounts of antioxidants, potassium, Vitamin C and phytoflavinoids. Regular consumption of the blue berries is said to lower the risks for cancer and heart disease considerably. They also have anti-inflammatory properties

Fish: cold-water fish contains Omega 3 fatty acids, which contain monounsaturated fats thus providing people with the best bet on lowering their cholesterol levels. Ideally, the best source of omega 3 is from wild salmons, sardines, mackerel and herrings. A healthy adult should take at least three servings of such every week.

Soy: Soy is flaunted as a suitable drug alternative for lowering cholesterol levels

Fiber foods: All foods help check cholesterol levels and helps in weight management

Tea: super foods experts claim that tea, whether green or black, has cancer inhibiting properties. Further, green tea has powerful antioxidant properties, which are ideal in lowering cholesterol in the human body.

Calcium rich foods: In addition to dairy products, one can take calcium supplements. Calcium helps the body build stronger bones and further prevents age-set osteoporosis. Ideally, people aged between nine and 18 years should take 1300 mg of calcium daily, while those aged between 19 to 50 years should take 1,000 mg calcium daily. People aged above 51 years should take 1200 mg calcium daily.

Observing the nutrition sector today, one would easily get confused understanding the entire concept of super foods. While some people use the above named foods, others include tomatoes, walnuts, pumpkins, turkey, oranges, broccoli, spinach, yogurt and beans. This then begs the question, just what are superfoods?

Proponents of this concept define such foods as any dietary item that has increased health benefits to the body and the mind, while having no side effects at all. Physical benefits include lower cholesterol, lower risks of cancer and heart disease. More to this, the foods are said to benefit the mind by improving the performance of the brain cells.

This definition hopefully provided enough insight to answer the question, what are super foods. The bottom line of their concept lies in the belief that food items in this category contain disease-fighting properties beneficial to the human body.
