If you use convenience foods or eat ready meals, read the labels to find the lowest sodium/salt content. Choose canned vegetables marked 'no added salt' and products such as tuna canned in water, rather than in brine or oil.

To convert sodium content to salt content, multiply the sodium by 2.5.

On labels, more than 0.5g of sodium (1.25g salt) per 100g is high, less than 0.2g sodium (0.5g salt) is low.

Potassium to Cure Gout


Gout is one of the most painful types of arthritis. I know this for a fact. When you're in the midst of an attack, you feel a stabbing, throbbing pain in your afflicted joint and it's almost impossible to put any pressure on it. A gout attack can be triggered by years of elevated uric acid (UA) condition. Now there are basically three components you may want to look at for curing gout or treating a gout attack: minimizing UA production, maximizing UA excretion and minimizing the pain during an attack. For this article, we will explore the second one and how Potassium (or potassium rich foods) is involved.

The normal range for UA is 3.4 - 7 (based on my last medical results) although I read that you can have gout with as low as 6. In my case, my UA was at 8.26. Being above the range means that not enough UA is being eliminated through the urine than what is being produced. We call this condition hyperuricemia. As a result of this, excess uric acids are crystallized and deposited in various joint spaces, causing the inflammation or gout attack.

If we want to force an equation just to visualize the condition, here's a rough way of looking at it.

If Uric Acid > 6, then

Uric Acid Production - Uric Acid Excretion = Uric Acid Crystals

Potassium's role in this equation is in Uric Acid Excretion. As it happens, uric acid is barely water soluble. Thus although you will read that drinking lots of water helps the condition, it is not enough. To make UA more soluble, the body has to be alkalized and potassium is one of the best counters for UA. Potassium helps by liquefying uric acid crystals so that these can be flushed out through the urine.

That said, gout sufferers should have a diet rich in potassium. The RDA for potassium is 4,200 milligrams. My favorite source is bananas. Each one can have 300 to 451 mg of potassium. That's why you would see some websites recommending eating 6-8 bananas. In the height of a gout attack, other foods high in potassium include: Milk, Prunes, Tomatoes, Vegetables, Potatoes and Berries.

When looking for high potassium foods, try to cross reference it with the high purine list. I wouldn't stock up on those. All meats have high potassium, but some have high purine content as well. For myself though, I choose bananas as my best source since it also has Vitamin C. Remember though that Potassium is a key component, but it's not everything you need to battle gout.

5 Fruits and Vegetables High in Potassium


Fruits and vegetables are one of the best sources for getting heart-healthy potassium. Because potassium is found naturally in fruits and vegetables, it is highly absorbable and can be used by the body in a variety of ways. Potassium is a mineral and electrolyte that regulates blood pressure as well as muscle function. Oh, and if you've ever wondered why prunes have an almost magical power to relieve constipation, it's because they are high in a natural laxative known as dihydrophenylistatin. Remember that factoid, and later you can really impress your friends!

Potatoes - 763 mg Before you justify those frequent trips to McDonalds for a side (meal) of fries let me preface by saying that the heart-healthy attributes of potassium in potatoes can be quickly negated if you add enough hot grease and salt. With that said, potatoes pack some pretty potent potassium (say that 5 times). The starchy tubers are a great source of other nutrients such as Vitamin B6 and manganese. It also has more Vitamin C than most citrus fruits but most is denatured (destroyed) when the spud is cooked. Just in case you are tempted to try and eat the potato raw, don't, you'll end up with a belly ache because the starch in potatoes is only digestible when broken down by heat (cooked).

4. Tomatoes - 292 mg People love to know 'em, grow 'em and throw 'em. For over a hundred years, this fruit (that's right, they actually are a fruit) has been unfortunately included in the lineup of such notorious vegetables as brussel sprouts and broccoli (just kidding, I love both). It actually was an act of congress that led us all down the wrong nomenclature path into calling tomatoes veggies. Way back in 1887, a U.S. tariff law imposed taxes on vegetables but not on fruits. Since our lawmakers weren't really any more honest back then, they reclassified all sorts of fruits as vegetables in order to increase veggie revenue. I wonder if it was called "The Tomato Scandal of 1887" Regardless, to this day, such fruits as tomatoes, cucumbers, and even pumpkins, while technically fruits are considered vegetables. I say leave that debate in the past and focus on what's important; tomatoes are a delicious source of potassium!

5. Spinach - 420 mg Die hard fans may be interested to know that the spinach industry was nearly bankrupt before the cartoon hero "Popeye" came to the rescue. In just a few short years, he had kids happily munching on "me spinach" again and had made spinach farmers rolling in green (money that is, not spinach). While spinach was originally chosen as Popeye's "magic food" for its high iron content, that wasn't the only thing transforming his strength from a wimpy weakling to a hulking hero. The high amounts of potassium in spinach caused his muscle filaments to tighten and relax at proper intervals giving the burley sailor the ability to lift houses, bend steel, wallop Pluto in the kisser, and most importantly, save Olive Oyl from certain doom.

Another Option Now an often overlooked aspect of potassium in the diet is that we should be consuming at least 4,700 mg of this mineral per day. This means eating a lot of bananas, a lot of potatoes, and probably more prunes than those around us would prefer. As a clinical nutrition scientist, I would be hard-pressed to ever suggest alternatives to fruits and vegetables but I will offer a suggestion for upping the potassium intake of those struggling to get enough. Goat milk is an excellent source of natural food-based minerals, such as potassium. When these minerals are gently extracted from the milk, the final product is a concentrated mineral rich food. Just 2 tablespoons of goat milk mineral whey has over 1,000 mg of potassium, which trumps all of the foods listed above. Goat milk mineral whey not only has high levels of potassium but also calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus delivering the health benefits of food based minerals in two spoonfuls. Potassium is a naturally occurring mineral found in every human body and in a wide variety of foods. It is one of the essential substances needed to maintain the body's internal balance of fluids and chemicals. A constant internal environment, in which the various chemicals and fluids are in a state of balance, is necessary if the cells are to carry on their vital functions. Any marked change in the concentration and content of water and chemicals within the body leads to drastic changes that modify our ability to function normally.

The Role of Potassium

Potassium, like sodium, is necessary to human life. The human body requires about equal amounts of both sodium and potassium. The typical American diet, however, provides much more sodium than needed and about the right amount of potassium, which is found in fruits, vegetables, some meats, dairy products and a variety of other foods. In addition, the increasingly popular salt substitutes usually contain potassium as a sodium substitute.

Because potassium is found in sufficient amounts in the average diet, a true dietary deficiency of potassium is very rare. However, hypokalemia, a deficiency of potassium in the blood, may occur under a number of specific circumstances that are unrelated to diet. Certain drugs, especially some of the diuretics used to treat high blood pressure, frequently lead to potassium reduction.

The best dietary sources of potassium are bananas, orange juice, raisins and other dried fruits, meats, peanut butter, bran, dried peas and beans and potatoes. Cocoa, coffee and tea also contain significant amounts of potassium.

Treatment of Potassium Depletion

An estimated two million Americans regularly take potassium supplements. Most are patients with high blood pressure, where potassium levels are lowered by their anti-hypertensive medications. In many instances, increased consumption of potassium-rich foods is all that is required. For others, however, additional potassium in the form of prescription supplements are needed. This is a determination that must be made by a physician.

There is a general confusion about linking food with acne. Well, there is a connection after all. It's all interlinked actually. I'll try to make it as simple as possible. Different people have different skin types. In fact, your skin type is as unique as your fingerprint.

So, your skin reacts differently with different foods. Like for instant, there are some people, whose skin can adapt to eating more oily food than others. Of course, too much oily food is unhealthy, unless if you consume it in modest amounts.

It could prevent you from getting acne. For those who have acne, this list is more like a natural treatment for curing it. I'll place the foods in three different categories. They are mainly water, fiber rich food and food high in antioxidants.

Water

I'll start with the basics. It all goes down to drinking water which is our natural resource to help hydrate our bodies. Well, I'm sure that you would have heard that drinking 8 glasses of water every day will help you get rid of toxins. Yes! That's true.

Well, for some it would just need about 6 to 7 glasses a day. Eight glasses of water is just a standard measure. You don't really have to follow that. The most important thing is that you must listen to your body.

So what is a toxin? A toxin is a poisonous substance produced within living cells or organisms. You can also check the skin on your palms. They are usually very dry and you can see some whitish wrinkling scaly effect. Just rub your fingers and it will be noisy! So do yourself a favor by drinking a glass of water every 2 to 3 hours.

Fiber

Next I'll talk about eating foods rich in fiber. They are commonly found in fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts. Fiber has plenty of benefits as they play an essential part of a healthy diet by adding bulk to your diet, making you feel fuller and also controlling your weight.

Fiber and fiber rich foods help your body digest your food better and prevent constipation. It will help to lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and also may help to prevent, ulcers, diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Increasing dietary fiber too quickly can lead to gas, diarrhea, bloating and cramps. You should add fiber to your diet gradually. It is the best approach when you want to include fiber in you diet on a daily basis. Once your body gets accustomed to it, you can start adding other forms of fiber in your diet. So what is a free radical? Let me give you some analogy. It's just like a car which is running on fuel by burning it together with oxygen generated by the pistons. Eating food rich in beta-carotene and zinc will actually not only prevent acne, but also naturally acts as a healing process and anti-scarring of acne. Beta-Carotene is a carotenoid compound responsible for giving fruits and vegetables their orange pigmentation.

It is a powerful antioxidant that has been found to help protect against cancer and aging. Yes! I just mentioned about aging. That's good news for your skin isn't it? Since beta-carotene is a fat soluble vitamin, consuming the following foods with a fat like olive oil or nuts can help absorption.

during the use of oral diuretics. Potassium-rich foods should be restricted during acute renal

failure and Addison's disease.
